The start-up from Cologne, renowned for its successful Linguee online dictionary, developed the DeepL translation tool based on deep learning. The translation system constantly improves and expands through machine learning, producing translations of a quality previously unheard of. Featured in titles such as Wired, Spiegel, and TechCrunch, the traction gained in the press is a testament to how impressed users were. We, too, were just as impressed – and came up with a redesign of the translation tool, which is available in a free online version and a pro version for businesses.
Something “typically start-up” was the fast pace of the project, which is often a necessity for these small ventures. Using the UI tool Figma, we provided a way to track our progress live so that the DeepL team could view and comment directly on the designers’ work at any time.

How can an excellent tool be made even better? By making absolutely sure that form follows function. Each and every little detail of user interaction was significant for the tool’s design – we left nothing to chance. The micro UX and transitions all shared the same single goal of creating a fun, intuitive interface. That is, making a first-rate translator even more top notch.
